Popeyes’ “Five Nights at Freddy’s” meal underdelivers, disappoints fans

To promote the upcoming release of “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” fast food icon Popeyes released a themed meal to advertise the film. Known for its iconic setting at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, fans of the franchise had high expectations for food-related items linked with the brand — unfortunately, those expectations were far from met.
According to Popeyes’ website, the ‘Freddy Fazbear Deluxe Box’ contains “3 pieces of our mouthwatering signature chicken tenders topped with a savory garlic parmesan rub, served with warm garlic crusted Cheesy Bites and a marinara sauce,” coming in at $12.99 excluding additional fees.

Having ordered the meal just under a week after the items were released, I was fairly disappointed to be met by a plain Popeyes box and cup in place of the themed ones. Still, I did not consider this to be an issue as long as the contents were good.
The Food
These were easily the best part of the meal, and having previously heard good things about Popeyes’ chicken, I was definitely not surprised. The tenders were crispy and tasted great, with the garlic parmesan topping serving as a nice flavor boost. This was the only menu item I had no issues with whatsoever.

Cheesy Bites and Marinara Sauce

In contrast, the cheesy bites were my least favorite part of this meal. They were not very flavorful and were uncomfortably chewy, with the cheese being relatively solid. The marinara sauce wasn’t nearly as disappointing and helped add a semblance of taste to the bites. I was hoping for the cheese to be a little meltier and the sauce to be hotter, but was unfortunately let down.

The cupcake cup fell somewhere in the middle, but was still generally disappointing. The cake part was fluffy and tasty overall, but the strawberry frosting strongly weighed it down with its overpoweringly strong, artificial flavor. If the cupcake looked a little more like the iconic cupcake it is meant to be referencing and the frosting wasn’t so strong, this would’ve been much better.
Strange Theming

Given that almost every game, book and film throughout the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” franchise is set in a pizzeria chain, a common thought has lingered since the announcement of this culinary collaboration: “Why partner with a chicken place? Aren’t the games and their film adaptations set in a pizzeria chain?”
I truly struggle to think of why Popeyes got a meal based on this franchise rather than an actual pizza chain. There’s not much to this meal beyond the cheesy bites that really indicate any ties to pizza, leaving consumers feeling frankly baffled.
When taking into consideration previous food collaborations the franchise has had, fans’ confusion is only amplified. When the first film came out, several cinemas had themed pizza boxes, and this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios featured themed cupcakes that looked far superior to the Popeyes version, as well as plenty of other superior fast food menu items
Although the majority of Popeyes’ meal theming is alright, it’s hard to not see it as rather lazy considering it really just consists of the film’s branding slapped onto regular cups and boxes, and this is really only worsened by the depressing “cupcake” which is quite literally just cake in a plastic cup.

Having never tried Popeyes, I was really looking forward to getting to experience it for the first time in such a fresh and new way, but this did not live up to the advertising. The only aspect of the meal I fully enjoyed were the chicken tenders — which makes sense, considering they are from a place known for its chicken — but with this meal being awkwardly themed and priced at $12.99 excluding any extra charges for taxes or even delivery, it is truly not worth the money. ✮
